The
travel options today for people over the age of 50 are almost endless. From bus
tours to adventure travel to theme cruises, you can take that dream vacation
you've been waiting for your whole life!
People today are living longer, healthier, more active lives, and they're reflecting that in their travel plans. Many people 50+ are learning to snorkel so they can book scuba diving vacations in the Caribbean, or going on safari in the wilds of Africa, or hiking up the spectacular cliffs to the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru.
If you're not quite up to the rigors of adventure travel, perhaps a cruise or bus tour would be more to your liking. And there are certainly plenty of those to choose from in almost every price range. Or you could take a rail tour through Europe, visit the Great Wall of China, or try your hand at the slot machines in Las Vegas.
But keep in mind there are some considerations when traveling abroad. You might want to consider buying travel medial insurance (TMI) in case your regular health insurance doesn't provide coverage outside the U.S. You should also consider travel insurance that will reimburse you in case something happens and you have to cancel or cut short your vacation.
You'll also need to get a passport, and any vaccinations that are required in the country you're visiting. And then there's the matter of money - taking cash along on your trip is risky, and your debit card may not work in some overseas locations. So consider buying travelers checks or a pre-paid travel card before you leave the country.
And finally, a good travel agent can be indispensible when planning your dream vacation. While certainly you can do most of your own booking these days online, a good travel agent will be familiar with many of the world's top tourist centers, and can often get you a better deal and better accommodations than you could find on your own.
